one in four adults think degrees have value
and that university is irrelevant to most
population growth plagues the minds of millions
and climate change is just an afterthought
towns are flooded cliffs collapse into the sea
acres of countryside unoccupied and free
but too many foreigners is all people see
crowding in cities abused by the locals
while the green belt is fracked and the water polluted
a third under forty have used dating apps
and say life is better when people come together
though not on their wedding night so much these days
too tired and hammered to go through the motions
if they're in a state school they're less likely to think
that they'll be successful than if they were rich
but everyone's happy with computers on their wrist
and facebook selling their identities to industry
their future consumption all bought and paid for
this is our world as polling data tells it
fourteen percent want to read war and peace
forty seven percent want to bring back the draft
four in ten people are trying to lose weight
fifty three percent want to travel to the past
the right wing think they have the moral high ground
with forty seven percent saying they're better than average
those on the left think people aren't born evil
only twenty percent on brits don't know whether aliens exist
while fifty two percent are fervent believers
if you read the polls they want to leave europe
so no hope of union with little green men
i like to read these things from time to time
to see where i am to the average person
who lives on these shores
and who's vocal and earnest
